  • IFWJ will be celebrating the 72nd foundation day 28th Oct 21

Indian federation of working journalist general secretary Mr Parmanand Pandey inform to all members of federation and all journalists thatO n the coming 28th of October, we will be celebrating the 72nd Foundation Day of the Indian Federation of Working Journalists (IFWJ). It was on this day that our great organisation came into existence in 1950 at Jantar Mantar of New Delhi. This was the first organisation of working journalists in the country. It was due to the inspiration and the motivation of Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel, who was also the first Information and Broadcasting Minister of Independent India, that the IFWJ was founded as it has been recalled in the famous books - ‘Journalism and Politics’ and ‘The Press’ – of celebrated journalist, Manikonda Chalapathi Rau (popularly known as the MC). Incidentally, he was the founder President of the IFWJ. He gave shape to the Working Journalists Act and was instrumental in making the most valuable suggestions in the First Press Commission.

It was because of this Act, working journalists got the twin protection of the Working Journalists Act of 1955 as well as of the Industrial Disputes Act. However, both Acts have now been rendered almost irrelevant as they are thoroughly inadequate in safeguarding the interests of the journalists mainly because of the explosion of the media industry and the new methods contrived by the media owners to defeat all the labour laws.

Therefore, the role of the IFWJ has now increased manifold to face the new challenges before the media. Let us pledge that we will work with renewed zeal and vigour to redeem our dreams to convert media into an effective tool of change in society and better working conditions for journalists without any fear of outside pressure.

We request all comrades across the country to celebrate the 72nd Foundation Day of the IFWJ and devise ways and means to help the working journalists and society.
